Leighton Meester keeps it cute in these new shots for Herbal Essences.
The 24-year-old actress (in a blue Marc Jacobs outfit) is the brand’s global hair ambassador! She’ll be featured in magazines nationwide and on advertorials on HerbalEssences.com and Facebook.
“I’m so happy to be working with Herbal Essences,” Leighton said. “It’s important for me that I partnered with a brand that I do use every day and I trust and I love…I use it personally and I want to spread the word about it. Herbal Essences takes great care of my hair.”
FYI: Leighton is wearing a Louis Vuitton leather skirt and Marc Jacobs blue top.
Leighton Meester may have the poreless skin and beguiling brown eyes of her fabulously flawed character, Blair Waldorf, on CW’s “Gossip Girl,” but that’s where their beauty similarities end.
Blair is anything but easy-going, says Meester, who takes a more relaxed approach to her looks.
“Her hair is very structured, she has perfect curls, perfect waves, a perfect blowout at all times….it really seems like she has a hairstylist doing her hair everyday,” she says.
Meester first came on the radar with a returning role as an uber-sexy virgin pop star on the HBO series “Entourage,” but her starring bid as the designer-clad Upper East Side mean girl on the CW drama has launched the actress, and “Gossip Girl”, into international recognition. Waldorf is as famous for her grandiose (or self-serving?) schemes as she is for not having a hair out of place while executing them.
As the new ambassador for Herbal Essences, Meester says she’s learned a thing or two about her mane, like accepting its natural texture – stick straight – and keeping it simple when she’s not working.
“When you get so used to seeing your face with makeup on, and seeing your hair styled perfectly all the time, you sort of lose touch with how beautiful you are naturally, and how great your hair can look if you just take care of it,” she says.
That’s why on days when she’s not working, Meester keeps her beauty regimen simple, with foundation-free skin, curled lashes, a little blush and sometimes a colourful lipstick. As for her hair, she uses Herbal Essences shampoo and conditioner (her favourites are Long-Term Relationship and Hello Hydration), followed by the Tousle Me Softly finishing touch cream for texture, and sometimes a few turns with a curling iron. The starlet’s beauty tips are down-to-earth, too, like wearing sunscreen and “spraying a little hairspray on a blush brush and sweeping it over hair to get rid of flyaways.”
Speaking in a suite at a hotel in downtown Toronto, Meester sports a candy-pink lip (which, coincidentally, matches the brand’s packaging), delicately-applied blush, and a gentle smokey grey eye that’s highlighted with satin peach shadow. Her makeup isn’t low-key, but it accentuates her natural beauty, giving her a slightly playful feel.
As the face of a re-vamped brand (once famous for it’s “orgasm” commercials), Meester is undoubtedly beautiful, but offers a relaxed vibe and approachability that not every starlet shares. When her affiliation with the hair care company was announced last April, “Gossip Girl” fans were shocked that co-star Blake Lively, known for her bodacious blonde waves, wasn’t snatched up for a hair campaign first.
“What makes [Leighton] such a fantastic spokesperson is this inner sense of self-possessed confidence,” says Charles Baker Strahan, celebrity stylist for Herbal Essences. Does she have any bad beauty habits?
“He’ll never admit that I ever did anything [wrong],” the actress answers for him.
It’s true. Strahan is positively animated about working with Meester. He says it’s a real collaboration to create a new look for each event. For example, he says, when they are getting ready for something like the MTV Movie Awards, Meester will send him pictures of styles she likes in magazines and he’ll use them to find something that suits her. His favourite hair tip is for women to go after the look they want – whether it’s buxom body or sleek and straight – but allow time before an event for a “happy accident,” like pinning back a few locks at the last minute.
“It’s almost like creating a character,” says Meester. “So if you’re going for a look that’s modern and fresh, you use very natural, neutral makeup – same with hair. It goes the other way around too – sometimes we do a really intense red lip and curl my hair and make it big.”
Now that she seems to have her beauty routine figured out, is there any look from her past that Meester regrets?
“Hot rollers…and too much bronzer,” she says with laugh.

Gossip Girl: Leighton Meester Does the Herbal with Charles Baker Strahan
I think the lovely Leighton Meester might’ve been slightly unimpressed with how far behind I am on “True Blood,” this season. Not in a judge-y way, but in an omigod-you-have-so-much-to-catch-up-on-and-it’s-so-good way. And I know she’s right. For ages I’ve been meaning to sign up for the channel that airs it. And thanks to my chat with Meester, I’ve done it and can check at least that off my list.
Meester was in town this past Saturday to chat about how she and delightful celeb stylist Charles Baker Strahan (below) are best Herbal-Essence buddies. I can’t tell you much more than that yet because I’m writing a story on what the actress and I discussed during an SUV-ride to the airport, but I’ll link when it’s published. Stay tuned.
And after that I’m scheduling a “True Blood” marathon. Soon-ish.
Here at Portrait Magazine (http://www.portraitmagazine.net), we are planning our first ever issue dedicated entirely to beauty! We’ll be assembling a list of the most beautiful people in entertainment (and sport) and we want you to nominate (and ultimately rank) the people you think are the most beautiful. So who’s your most beautiful – the easiest on the eyes, mind and heart?
Leighton Meester on Her Willingness to Go Bald for a Role (and Other Beauty Secrets)
As it turns out, Blair Waldorf and Leighton Meester probably wouldn’t be BFFs in real life. While the Gossip Girl actress’s character is known for her designer wardrobe and flawless beauty, in real life, Meester couldn’t care less about keeping up with the trends or taming her tresses. “I’m not super OCD when it comes to every little flyaway,” Meester told PEOPLE. “I like being a little undone.” And while the 24-year-old star recently became global spokeswoman for hair care brand Herbal Essences, she wouldn’t hesitate to chop off her signature long locks if for the right role.
“I know it’s just hair and I can change it however I want. I haven’t shaved my head or anything like that. But, you know if I needed to! It’s part of my job to change my hair.” For Meester, embracing change is part of her routine, admitting to “playing a part” when she’s on a red carpet. And she turns to her dream team, including makeup artist Chris Colbeck and hairstylist Charles Baker Strahan, to help create her image. “It’s all about individuality and making a big statement. I leave it to the pros, they’re artists. I’ll be like, ‘just do your thing.’” For more on Meester’s style, hair hang ups and beauty saves and splurges, check out this week’s issue of PEOPLE, on newsstands now.
Leighton Meester worries people think she’s “crazy” when they see her walking around in her Gossip Girl costumes.
The actress plays queen bee Blair Waldorf in the American drama series, which is filmed and based in New York. The show is famed for the outfits the characters wear, and as someone who takes an interest in the catwalk Leighton enjoys having the opportunity to dress up.
However, she is less keen on some of the comments her flamboyant costumes attract. “It’s fun to dress up, much better than having boring clothes, but it can be challenging because I know I have to walk down the street in a ball gown sometimes,” she explained. “People point at me and say ‘Who is that crazy person?’ I just have to try and ignore it.”
Leighton has previously admitted her personal style is very different to Blair’s. She loves the way her character is always so polished and fashionable, but in her own life prefers to be more comfortable.
The actress has picked up some tips from being on the show though, namely that it’s good to mix high-end and cheaper pieces to create a signature look.
“It doesn’t always have to be the same all the time,” she said. “Of course my character has, like, really great taste, but sometimes they’ll throw in something from H&M, and it looks great. So there are really no rules.”
